About Susie
The link between diet and health has always interested me – from my
studies in biology, chemistry and food & nutrition at school to my
honours degree in Food Science at Reading University.
From science to nutrition
At university I studied under nutritionist and medical herbalist Dr Ann Walker, which marked the start of my journey into the relationship between nutrition and female hormone balance. For my clinical research module I helped set up and complete a pilot clinical study into the effects of vitamin B6 and magnesium supplementation on women suffering from PMS. The success of the pilot led to a full-scale clinical trial which was published in the Journal of Women s Health & Gender Based Medicine, 2000.
Discovering nutrition as a therapy
I went on to study at the Institute of Optimum Nutrition in London for a further three years, learning how to use nutrition as a therapy. I became empowered by what I learnt from Patrick Holford, Kate Neil, Suzanna Olivier and Jeff Bland.
Learning the ropes
During my studies and after graduation I worked for The Optimum Nutrition Company (1996-1998), The Nutrition Practitioner (1998-2000), Higher Nature (1997-2002) and the Food Doctor (2002-2007). Working with people like Kate Neil, Celia Wright, Ian Marber and Vicky Edgson was truly inspiring. I used the time to nurture my writing skills and develop a comprehensive knowledge of nutritional supplements and effective clinical protocols.
Finding my clinical feet
I started clinical practice as soon as I graduated as a Nutritional Therapist in 1998 and over the last 10 years my clinical experience has expanded to encompass many health conditions and symptoms. I practiced as a Nutritional Therapist at the Higher Nature Clinic, Burwash, The Food Doctor Clinic, London and at the Dyke Road Natural Therapy Clinic in Brighton – where I continue to practice today.
Spreading the word
In 2003 I started lecturing at Raworth College, Dorking on subjects including pregnancy, PCOS, endometriosis, menopause and female hormone balance, before becoming a Clinical Observation Tutor at Raworth, Institute of Optimum Nutrition and College of Naturopathic Nutrition, Brighton. Nutritional therapy has given me so much and sharing my knowledge and clinical experience through teaching is one way of giving something back.
In the news
I also enjoy health writing, spreading the word about nutritional therapy through the media. I am regularly commissioned to write health features by a number of national magazines, including Cosmopolitan, Zest, Woman, Reveal, Best and B. Look out for my monthly column about all things healthy in Brighton's Insight magazine and my weekly Diet Column in NOW magazine.
